Divide and Conquer: How to Divide a Space with Style

Wouldn’t it be lovely if space in the home was unlimited?  If we had one room for every function or activity in our lives, furnishing each space would be a no-brainer.  That might be feasible in a sprawling 20-room English manor (Downton Abbey, anyone?), but most of us have to find creative and clever ways to make our living spaces multi-tasking-friendly.   For most of us, finding ways to divide our spaces intelligently is an ongoing battle.  How do you create a space that accomplishes many different goals while still managing to look cohesive and well-put-together?  We put together this great list of ways that you can create functional yet beautiful divided spaces:

1. Portable Folding Screens

The classic folding screen has been a staple in home décor for many years.  Your imagination is the only limit when it comes to using this functional and portable element in your home.  These accordion-like dividers can double as chalkboards, photo collages, and works of art – you get to decide.

2. Area rugs

If vertical division would make your space feel to small or claustrophobic, consider creating division and flow by connecting different design elements together using area rugs layered over your flooring.  A seating area could have one rug underlying chairs, couches and coffee tables, while another rug could mark out a small home office space or dining area.

3. Curtains

Fabric is endlessly versatile and easy to work with.  Stretched-canvas panels can be painted and hung from the ceiling, or curtains can be strung across a space using picture wire or curtain rods.

4. Bookshelves

Functional and efficient, the humble bookshelf can be the ideal divisional element in many different spaces.  Display your prized collection of classic titles while also partitioning your spaces effectively.  Two bookshelves back-to-back can overwhelm a space, so consider double-sided shelving units for a more open look.

5. Double-sided Fireplaces

An electric fireplace is a sure bet for adding charm and atmosphere to any living space.  Mantels like the Dimplex Amsden Opti-Myst Fireplace can be assembled as open, double-sided units perfect for providing ambiance and comfort while also functioning as a clever room divider.
