We recently supplied a PowerChef TBQ-120 Deluxe electric grill for an episode of CityLine TV. If you’re not familiar with CityLine, it’s the ‘longest running and most successful daytime show for women in Canadian history’, according to the CityLine website. Each show is taped in front of a live audience, a week in advance of its air date. Taping is done between 10:00 am and 11:00 am in a downtown Toronto studio. This means that all products being delivered for that day’s taping must be on-site at 9:05 am, to allow time for set-up, and dismantled at 11:05 am, to make way for the next show. Needless to say, it’s a mad rush to get everything on-site and set up in time.
In the case of the grill, the producer asked that we deliver it to the show’s celebrity chef a week prior to the taping, in order for him to become familiar with it. This required delivery to his home, and then a pick-up the following week, prior to delivering it to the studio for taping. It’s a lot of extra running around for a single show, but when we learned that the chef in question was Michael Bonacini, co-owner of Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants, we were happy to oblige.
On taping day, it’s amazing to observe the organized chaos that accompanies a live-to-tape show. At one commercial break, it was discovered that a crew member had inadvertently unplugged the grill on which Chef Bonacini was about to demonstrate, and on which he had hot food. We had to quickly jump to the rescue to resolve the issue, and avert culinary disaster on national television.
We’re happy to report that the grilling segments were a great success. Chef Bonacini, along with Chef Jason Parsons, of Peller Estates Winery Restaurant, made several dishes: Cedar-planked Nachos & Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese Quesadillas. Chef Bonacini was a good sport, and happily posed with the grill on the set, so that we could snap some pics.
He and Chef Parsons were also kind enough to pose for a photo opportunity with the winner of our audience give-away, who received a brand new PowerChef TBQ-120 Deluxe. She later told us that her grill had recently died, and she was thrilled to receive a new one.
As you watch this episode of CityLine, consider all the effort that went into it. You will appreciate the on-air talent so much more now that you understand a little of what they are dealing with behind the scenes.
